Francis Egerton, the second son of the 1st Duke of Sutherland was born in 1800. He married the daughter of Charles Greville in 1822.

Egerton was elected to the House of Commons in 1935 where he represented Lancashire South. A Tory, Egerton was strongly opposed to factory legislation.

Egerton was created the 1st Earl of Ellesmere in July 1846. He died on 18th February 1857.

I perceive that the growth of the cotton manufacture in America has proceeded with a rapidity almost equal to our own, and that of France, although the progress has not been so great, it is still but little short, and quite sufficient to make me deeply apprehensive. I therefore think that any legislation by which our manufactures are likely to be effected, we should keep the increased production of foreign countries closely in view.
